There’s no such thing as Bad Weather!
Posted in Blogs on 21st November 2022
When you go camping in the UK, you likely aren’t expecting blue skies and sunshine – although this might be what you are hoping for! You find yourself scouting through forecast reports, trying to choose a weekend when little rain is scheduled, or even cancelling trips altogether due to the conditions outside. At the end of the year, your major regret is that you didn’t go camping enough, and it was all thanks to the snow, wind and rain.

So, what if there was no such thing as bad weather? Here at World of Camping, we believe this is the case. In this blog, we’re going to explain why rain is good for your health and wellbeing, and why there is nothing better for your soul than getting outside and enjoying good old Mother Nature.
The effects of winter on our health and wellbeing
Winter is a cold and drab time of the year, or so it’s perceived by many. Its temperatures can drop below freezing in some areas, binding people to their homes.
In the worst-case scenario, a lack of light and dreary conditions can cause seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Those who suffer from SAD can struggle with feelings of depression throughout these months, experiencing irritability and mood swings, but staying indoors merely reduces their exposure to natural light and fresh air, which can make the symptoms of the disorder worse.
If you suffer from SAD, it may be worth understanding more about how cold temperatures can actually be good for you, both physically and mentally. Not only do you burn more calories from your body trying to maintain its core temperature, but the cold can also boost your sleep, lower inflammation, help you to think more clearly and improve your allergies.
Why rain is actually GOOD for you
Getting outside, and doing camping-related activities like hiking and putting up your tent, are great ways to get outdoors in winter. Don’t let the rain put you off – not only does the smell of rain help to regulate the brain chemicals that affect mood, but it’s also good for the skin and hair as it doesn’t contain minerals and harmful particles.
When we are in environments that contain moving water, like rain, we inhale negative ions that are tasteless, odourless and invisible. When these reach our bloodstream, biochemical reactions help to relieve stress and depression – they even boost our energy!
What’s more, walking in the rain is said to burn more calories at a faster pace because the body has to work harder to stay warm, thereby burning more fat to generate heat.
Whether you are walking, running, or just generally enjoying being at one with nature, being outside is often prescribed by health professionals to improve our overall wellbeing.
