Towing a Caravan: Safety Tips & Advice

Caravanning is a fantastic way to travel without breaking the bank or compromising on your voyaging freedom, but many are daunted by the prospect of towing their own. Indeed, there is a lot to consider before you tow your caravan for the first time, but it’s certainly doable; and your first attempt can add to the sense of adventure!

Can anyone tow a caravan?

The rules for towing were updated in 2021. All drivers can now tow trailers with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of up to 3,500kg without the need to take a separate test. This does depend on when you first took your driving test though: the RAC advises that those who passed their test before 1st January 1997 are legally able to tow a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg MAM. Of course, this is all dependent on how much your car can pull – the maximum towable weight is usually listed in the handbook.

Regulations vary for learner drivers, those aged 70+, and drivers in Northern Ireland – guidance should be sought before any attempt to tow is made.

What are the width and length rules for towing? Does my towing affect the speed limit?

The maximum trailer width, no matter which vehicle you’re using to tow, is 2.55 metres. The maximum length for a MAM of 3,500kg is 7 metres.

The legal speed limits do not apply if you are towing. 50mph must never be exceeded on single carriageways and 60mph on dual. It’s also worth noting that vehicles may not tow in the furthest right lane of a three (or more) lane motorway unless specifically instructed to.

Do I need specific caravan insurance?

While car insurance remains a legal requirement no matter what you’re doing with a vehicle on the road, technically a specific insurance for a towed unit is not mandatory. However, it is always recommended: as an accident as a result of towing can be extremely costly without comprehensive insurance cover, and your car policy may not cover it. It’s always worth checking ahead of any journey!

You should never have passengers in the caravan itself while it is being towed – would likely invalidate all and every related insurance.

What extras do I need to tow my caravan?

When towing, it’s a legal requirement for the driver to have a ‘good view’ of the rear of the unit. For most vehicles, this means the use of extension mirrors to grant this view.

It’s always recommended that you carry chocks for parking but also in the case of tyre change. These can be purchased cheaply and easily.

Don’t forget the importance of a caravan mover. This can either be fitted by yourself or by a professional to help take the stress out of manoeuvring.
